Davis Derby has a long and distinguished history. Below is a brief list of milestones that have lead to our position today.

1779

Gabriel Davis opens his Instrument business in Boar Lane Leeds, later he employs his nephew John Davis

1830-1843

John Davis makes regular visits to Derby opening temporary shops for each visit.

1844

John Davis relocates to Derby and opens a permanent shop and workshop

1840-1850

Evidence that John Davis and Son are manufacturers of miners lamps

1873


John Davis dies, the company lists Theodolites, Anemometers, miner’s lamps, pressure gauges, medical devices, spectacles and opera glasses in its catalogue.
The business was taken over by Henry Davis, son of John.

1875

The business moves to All Saints Works Amen Alley, Derby England

1886

The company supplies it’s first lighting system to the Mill Close lead mine in Derbyshire England

1889

Davis Derby supplies electricity to local shops and offices

1890

Davis Derby was an agent for Jeffery coal cutting machines located in Columbus Ohio

1890-1910

Davis Derby opens a business in the US based in Baltimore and appoints agents in Johannesburg, Natal, Rhodesia, Canada, Australia, China and Japan

1914

Davis Derby opens a slide rule manufacturing plant having previously sold imported products from Germany and Japan.

1920-1935

1945-1955

Davis Derby discontinues miner’s lamps and instruments and concentrates on electrical equipment for mines.

1962

Davis Derby sold to Standard Industrial Group based in the UK

1966

Davis Derby relocates to a new factory on Alfreton Road Derby

1972

Davis Derby launches the SIVAD Mk 2 Coal face signalling System – over 5000 sold worldwide.

1977

Davis Derby launched the Flameproof Monitoring system – sales quickly reach £1,000,000 per year.

1982

Davis Derby launches the Telemetry Interface unit, which became an “Industry Standard” in the UK coal industry.
Davis Derby supplies it’s first micro-processor based SCADA system to Renishaw Park colliery

1980

Pearson acquires Fairey Engineering and restructures the engineering companies under Fairey.

1987

Fairey successfully achieve an MBO from Pearson. Davis Derby sold to Senior Engineering Group

1988-1985

Davis Derby launches the PMCU 1, PMCU 2 microprocessor based telemetry outstations and the Mine Radio system.

1989

Senior Engineering re-names the mining companies as Senior Mining Equipment Ltd. (Comprising Davis Derby, Hayden Nylos Conflow and RF Luke.

1991

Davis Derby reaches agreement with Texas Instruments to develop and sell TIRIS RFID systems into hazardous areas.

1992

Communication and Control Engineering acquire Davis Derby Ltd

1993

Davis Derby re-locates to Chequers Lane Derby

1995

Davis Derby launches the TruckLOG FLT Driver access control system

1999

Davis Derby launches the TruckLOG EV 16 FLT Driver access control system

2001

Davis Derby launches the TruckLOG S 16 FLT Driver access control system

2002

Davis Derby launches the PC 21 mining system

2003

Davis Derby launches the TruckLOG FLT Speed control products

2004

Davis Derby launches the TruckLOG SD 1 FLT Access control system
Davis Derby launches the Multi Tag RFID system for mines and

2005

Davis Derby wins largest project in history, supplying minewide monitoring to Yuzkuzbassugol, Russia
