Davis Derby manufactures a range of radio frequency identification systems
using passive battery-less radio transponders. These transponders are detected
by an antenna connected to a Davis Derby Rapid 2000 RFID reader unit. This data
sheet describes the various antennas which can be provided.
Typical applications include the following:
-
Vehicle Detection
-
Personnel Detection
-
Asset Tracking
-
Access Control
Versions
There are several versions of antenna, including pole-mounted types, road
loops and wall mounted types. In addition, special antennas are available
suitable for use in hazardous areas where there may be a risk of igniting
flammable gases. Hazardous area antennas are certified EEx m for groups I, IIA
and IIB applications.
Antenna Description
All versions of Davis Derby RFID antennas are extremely rugged and
weatherproof. They are designed to operate at distances of up to 5 metres from
the associated reader unit. However this distance can be increased to 120 metres
by fitting a long tail remote tuning unit between the reader and the antenna
which is normally installed adjacent to the antenna.
Details of the Antennas
Roadside Antennas
The pole-mounted roadside antenna comprises a steel tubular pole complete
with a GRP moulded assembly containing the antenna winding and two optional
light emitting diodes which glow to indicate that the system is functioning. The
roadside antenna can be supplied with either a straight or a cranked pole as
shown. The antenna can also be supplied with alternative mouldings as shown
below:

Wall Mounted Antennas
The wall-mounted antennas are similar to the pole mounted antennas but are
supplied with back straps to enable wall mounting.
Road Loop Antennas
A range of road loop antennas is available using a high grade of cable
designed for sinking into the road surface. For optimum performance, it is
important that the road loop antenna is at least 25cm above any metal
reinforcing rods that may be present beneath the surface of the road.
There are several standard sizes of road loop antenna which give different
ranges in terms of read range and the maximum speed of vehicles which can be
detected:
| 1 x 1.5 metres |
2 x 1.5 metres |
3 x 1.5 metres |
| 3 x 2 metres |
4 x 3 metres |

Special Applications
There are several other antenna styles available to suit individual
applications, for example we can mount the Rapid 2000 reader unit on the pole on
roadside antennas.
