RFID Transponders
DescriptionExample of a transponder

Davis Derby manufactures a range of radio frequency identification systems using passive battery-less radio transponders. These transponders are detected by an antenna connected to a Davis Derby Rapid 2000 RFID reader unit. This data sheet describes the various Transponders which can be provided.

Typical applications include the following:

  • Vehicle Detection

  • Personnel Detection

  • Asset Tracking

  • Access Control

There are several versions of transponder, including vehicle mounted, credit card versions, glass capsule versions and a range of moulded types. In addition, special transponders are available suitable for use in hazardous areas where there may be a risk of igniting flammable gases. Hazardous area transponders are certified EEx ia for groups I, IIA, IIB and IIC applications.

Transponder Description

All transponders in the range are extremely durable, can be read through virtually any non-metallic substance and the performance is unaffected by dust and moisture although the close proximity of ferrous metal does have an adverse effect on all transponders except the mounton-metal vehicle transponder.

Memory Type

There are several versions of each transponder as follows:

Code    Memory Type                      Description
RO Read Only The transponder has a factory programmed unique 64-bit number that
cannot be over-written.
R/W Read/Write The transponder can be re-programmed by the user as often as required. 80 bit wide data can be programmed into the transponder
MPT Multipage Transponder This is a read/write device with a 1360-bit memory; this memory is arranged into 17 read/write pages, each of 80 bits.

Each page can be locked by the user to become read only to ensure that data is not overwritten.

Vehicle Transponder

Davis Derby has designed a high performance vehicle transponder with a read range of 1.8 metres; this transponder is immune to the close proximity of metal and is designed to be attached to the vehicle chassis.

The vehicle transponder is housed in a tough polyester enclosure and is suitable for mounting on trucks, cars, buses, locomotives and railway rolling stock. The transponder is suitable for many applications including traffic prioritisation schemes and automatic operation of car park barriers.
