TruckLOG speed zoning system

Automatically limits the speed of forklift trucks when they enter or leave speed zones

  • Increased safety
  • Improves driving standards
  • Automatic speed limiting
  • Self checking for reliable operation
Introduction

When forklift trucks are driven too fast in areas where operatives are working or in confined spaces, there is an ever-present risk of accidents occurring and damage to the truck, the building and racking etc.

The Speed Zoning system automatically limits the speed of forklift trucks to acceptable levels when entering or leaving an area (or zone) allowing full speed only where it is deemed safe to do so.

Description

The system is designed to limit the speed of forklift trucks to pre-determined levels appropriate to specific areas (or zones).

The system is based on infra-red (IR) transmitter units strategically positioned around a site located over doorways. In open areas such as canopies multiple transmitter units can be installed to create a curtain of infra-red covering the full width of the opening.

Each transmitter unit transmits a coded signal relating to the maximum speed of trucks in the zone it is entering. For IC trucks different speeds can be selected however the number of speeds for electric trucks will depend on the specific truck control system. The codes transmitted can also be used to limit the reach height of the truck in certain areas or to operate devices on the truck such as beacons.

Each truck is equipped with an infra-red receiver unit which detects the infra-red signal. The truck is also fitted with a Test emitter to ensure the truck receiver is functional. In the event of a fault the truck speed defaults to a low speed. The infra-red detector unit on the truck interfaces with a Speed limiter module which limits the truck speed.

Setting Up the System

The system is set up by means of switches in the infra-red transmitter units. The infra-red units can be reset using a hand held Programming device which transmits the appropriate speed code to the fixed transmitter. The programming device can also be used to confirm the speed setting of infrared (IR) transmitter units to confirm the system has been set correctly and as a maintenance aid.
